Yellow Bellied Baetis Nymph

Small mayfly nymphs make up a large portion of our local trout’s diet. I like fancy and realistic fly patterns, but they aren’t always necessary. The Yellow Bellied Baetis Nymph is a super easy fly to tie. The YBBN is best fished in concert with another nymph. Tying Barr’s Tung Teaser

barrs tung teaser nymph

Barr’s Tung Teaser is an excellent all purpose nymph from John Barr. This pattern has become a staple in my box and the bins at the shop. We often fish it as the lead fly in a two fly nymph rig. This pattern combines the effective features of many popular nymphs- biot tails, epoxy back, hackle legs. Tie and fish in sizes 12-18.

Tying with Hans- Tungsten Squirrel Hair Leech

On the small streams I frequent, it is hard to fish streamers. It doesn’t seem like an obviously fly choice. However, once you start using them and catching fish they become a staple in your box. Rabbit Hair leeches and squirrel hair leeches work great. On smaller water I find myself fishing them more and more. I cast across, let them sink, swing, and then “jig” them back upstream. Tie some and you will be happy you did.

Tungsten Psycho Nymph

This is a great nymph from Solitude flies. The Tungsten Psycho Nymph is a great all purpose nymph. We typically use it as the lead fly in a two fly rig. In the smaller sizes it does a great job imitating a variety of mayfly nymphs. It is also a good attractor when tied in larger sizes.
