It’s finally feeling like fall in the Black Hills, with cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. The fishing has been fantastic on Rapid, Spearfish, and Castle Creeks, and should continue to be great throughout the month. There’s some good lake fishing opportunities right now also, with pike fishing starting to heat up as well!

Rapid Creek above Pactola has come down considerably, and is flowing right around 50 cfs. With the lower water, the fish will be pushed back into the deeper runs and pools, and they’ll be less common in the skinnier pocket water. Nymph fishing with various generic nymph...

Black Hills Fishing Report – 8/15/2020

We’ve had some warmer, drier weather over the past few weeks, but the fishing on Rapid, Spearfish, and Castle Creek is still solid. There have been increasing numbers of hoppers around, which has created some good dry fly opportunities!

Rapid Creek above Pactola has been good, particularly in the higher elevations. Nymph fishing has been good near Silver City with various jigs and midges. Assassins, North Fork Specials, Optic Nerves, and Jig Prince Nymphs have been great bets. If the fish get picky, drop a Zebra midge in size 16-18 behind as a...

While the weather has been leaning towards the hot side the last couple weeks, the fishing continues to be solid on most all Black Hills streams. We’re getting into some better dry fly fishing on a few areas, but the nymph rig has been putting up the most numbers still.

Rapid Creek above Pactola is down to a fishable level around 90 cfs, and there have been decent numbers of lake run rainbows around as well as lots of smaller wild browns. Nymph fishing with larger flies like worms, mop flies, jig Hare’s Ears, North Fork Specials, and Pheasant...

Snow has been the theme so far this winter and spring, but the fishing continues to be solid. Fishing throughout the Black Hills has been good to excellent most days, and there’s been some fantastic dry fly fishing when the wind isn’t blowing. As has been the case over the last month, the lower elevation streams have been fishing better than the higher elevation stuff, but if the weather continues a warming trend the upper stretches will start fishing as well.

Rapid Creek above Pactola is open for the most part, but will be pretty dirty especially if the weather is...

The fishing throughout the Black Hills area continues to be solid, and the weather looks like it’s going to stay solid for the coming week as well. We might see a bit of runoff over the next day or two, but the creeks will still be more than fishable and the higher water will probably move some fish around as well. The lower elevation creeks will still be your best bets, but over the next few weeks the upper stretches of many streams will open up and be an option as well. Fishing is solid right now!
