Snow has been the theme so far this winter and spring, but the fishing continues to be solid. Fishing throughout the Black Hills has been good to excellent most days, and there’s been some fantastic dry fly fishing when the wind isn’t blowing. As has been the case over the last month, the lower elevation streams have been fishing better than the higher elevation stuff, but if the weather continues a warming trend the upper stretches will start fishing as well.

The fishing has been solid on all of the lower elevation streams, as well as both tailwaters.

More water equals happy trout. The fishing has been pretty solid throughout the Black Hills, mostly at lower elevations. Rapid Creek in town, Spearfish Creek in Spearfish, Sand Creek, and Crow Creek are some of the most consistent options this time of year. Nymphing has been the name of the game if you want to catch big numbers, but there’s good opportunities for dry fly fishing if you’re in the right place at the right time.

Nymph-wise, a wide variety of stuff...
