With the lower flows, longer nights, and cooler temps, we’ve been starting to see quite a few Blue Winged Olives hatching over the past few weeks, and the fish have been up on them pretty consistently. This is some of the best dry fly fishing we see all year, and it brings some nice fish up to feed on the surface for several hours each day. The hatch will continue through mid-October typically, and lasts the majority of the afternoon. If you like semi-technical dry fly fishing, the next month and a half will be your time of year! The fishing throughout the Black Hills area continues to be solid, and the weather looks like it’s going to stay solid for the coming week as well. We might see a bit of runoff over the next day or two, but the creeks will still be more than fishable and the higher water will probably move some fish around as well. This weekend looks like it’s going to be a great weekend to be out on the water – partly sunny and highs in the 40’s with little wind. Next week is looking to have even better weather, with highs in the 50’s. In short, the next week is going to be the best weather we’ve seen in awhile and the fishing should be excellent. The fishing has been solid on all of the lower elevation streams, as well as both tailwaters.

There’s places you can go and fish most of the day to have a shot at one 15 pounder,...

Black Hills Fall Pike Fishing Update

Ryan Gabert Black Hills Black Hills Fishing Black Hills Fishing Reports Dakota Angler fishing Fly Fishing guide northern pike pike Uncategorized

Pike fishing is heating up again throughout the Black Hills and surrounding area! This is a great time of year to be out chasing pike on a fly rod – they’re pretty shallow, aggressive, and the big fish are definitely looking to pack on a few pounds before winter sets in. That being said, the fish in the fall act quite a bit different than they do in the spring. Most of the fall pike you’re going to find are more focused on structure and ambushing food, rather than laying up in the shallows near the areas where they’ll eventually...
