Black Hills Fly Fishing Report April 8th 2020

Flows have increased around the Black Hills over the past week as snow melt from higher upstream has made it into our streams. Fishing continues to be good to excellent. Baetis mayflies, little black stoneflies, and midges are hatching. Flows in some areas have kept fish from feeding much on the surface. We have had excellent luck nymphing. Streamer bite should be good as well. Opportunities for dry fly fishing exist, but they have been inconsistent.

Rapid Creek is clearest below Pactola Reservoir. Flows are up to 130 cfs...

With all of the craziness going on right now, getting out and going fishing is one of the best things we can be doing right now! The fishing around the Black Hills area has been fantastic, and everything is waking up from winter. The longer days and nicer weather have created some fantastic fishing opportunties around the Black Hills over the last couple weeks! The fishing has been great on most area streams, and the dry fly fishing has really picked up as well. The weather this weekend looks excellent to get out and enjoy some Black Hills fly fishing!

Rapid Creek above Pactola is mostly frozen and off color. We’ve had a lot of people ask about it lately – give it a few more weeks or a month and the fishing will be good up there.

Despite colder temps this week the fishing has still been fantastic, particularly at lower elevations. Rapid Creek in town and below Pactola has been fishing great, and Spearfish Creek has had solid fishing as well. The weather towards the end of this week looks to be in the low forties, which will be a perfect opportunity to get out on the water and do some winter fishing!
