Flies for Spring Fishing in the Black Hills

With warm weather upon us, fishing season is getting going a bit earlier than normal. Hatches have picked up in the past week. Midges and Baetis are the hatching daily. Little Black Stoneflies are hatching here and there. Nymphing has been good to excellent. If you’re willing to cover water and chuck a streamer, you will be rewarded. To make sure you’re ready for the spring conditions check out these fly suggestions.

Dry Flies

Keep these patterns in your box during the spring months in the Black Hills. You will be ready for hatches of Baetis, Midges, and Little Black Stoneflies.

Nymphs

These four nymphs will work across the Black Hills this spring. For faster water go with the top two nymphs. For slower or clearer water try the nymphs on the bottom row.

Streamers

For trout….big trout…try a Lil Kim or double bunny streamer. Cover water and fish the structure. You might be surprised what you find!
