Black Hills Fishing Report 7/1/13

Rapid Creek

  • In Town – Tricos are going strong 6-9 am. Terrestrials through the day- mainly beetles, ants, crickets, and cicadas. Evening hatches of Pale Evening Duns and Caddis. Nymphing consistent through the day.
  • Below Pactola – A bit tricky below the dam. Big fish on dries are a solid possibility, but this isn’t the place for numbers. Terrestrials- ants, beetles, and crickets are the best bets.
  • Silver City – Nymphing continues to be the best. Dry dropper fishing is a good bet in the shallower runs and riffles.

Spearfish Creek

The canyon is still fishing well. Not seeing fish? Fish the fast water. They are there. Keep things on a short lease, high stick the pocket water. The canyon is a great place to learn tenkara fishing. We have a full compliment of Tenkara gear in stock.

Dry fly fishing is decent in the canyon. Fish stimulators, beetles, and crickets. Caddis and Pale Evening Duns late in the day.

Spring Creek

Warming up again. Hope they get the valve on for a test soon.

Castle Creek

Fishing has been great below Deerfield. Fair amount of dry fly fishing. Baetis (aka Blue Winged Olives) continue to hatch. Little Yellow Stones are hatching. Nymphing has been quite productive as well.

Black Hills Lakes

Horse Thief, Sylvan, Center, Roubaix, and all of the other small lakes are fishing well with Mini Leeches, Wooly Buggers, and Sculpzilla’s down under, and with Parachute Adams and Callibaetis Spinners fooling some of the rising fish.

WARMWATER REPORT

Black Hills Smallmouth Bass

Fishing is picking up for bass on Black Hills Lakes. Fish early for the best luck. A sink tip line is a big help to keep your flies in the strike zone.

Local warmwater action is picking up. Sheridan and Stockade have decent bass fishing. Fish big flies to keep the little guys off (read Rock Bass etc.). Ehler’s Grim Reapers have been a hit. Popper action early and late.
