Rapid Creek continues to fish very well through Rapid City. Flows have been increased below Pactola Reservoir which has made for much better fishing in the tailwater. Hatches of midges and Baetis continue to offer superb dry fly fishing nearly every day. The surface activity starts as early as 8:00 am and can last until mid afternoon. Typically the hatches start earlier on warmer mornings. Fishing with size 18-20 midge adult patterns and size 16-18 Baetis dries is the ticket. We have had good luck with Griffith’s Gnats, Sipper Midges, Students, CDC Thorax Duns, and CDC baetis.

Nymphing has been excellent, and if you want to fish streamers, you will get results. Here is a breakdown of some of the current conditions by stream.

Rapid Creek has been great through Rapid City as well as below Pactola Reservoir. Hatches of midges and Baetis have been provided superb dry fly...

Fishing throughout the Black Hills continues to be great, and the streams are all pretty vacant for the most part. This time of year offers some of our favorite fishing, and is generally pretty productive regardless of what method you choose to fish. The dry fly fishing has started to get good as well, with a midges hatching on most streams and Blue Winged Olives starting to get fired up. A lot of the smaller streams are starting to open up as well, and the fishing just about everywhere has been great!

Rapid Creek below Pactola has been fishing alright, but...

It’s finally been above freezing for the last few days, and the fishing has been fantastic! The warmer weather has brought quite a few fish to the surface most days, and the nymphing has been great if they’re not on the surface. The weather over the next few days looks to be in the high twenties to low thirties, which is a heck of a lot better than it has been for the past month!

Rapid Creek in town has been one of the best bets for consistent fishing, and also has the most consistent dry fly fishing of just...

It’s been quite some time since our last fishing report, and we apologize for that. The weather hasn’t been very conducive to fly fishing to say the least, with the last week hovering around zero for the majority of the days. This week is looking to be a heck of a lot better, with highs nearing 40 most days. This is going to create some great fishing, namely through town on Rapid Creek and on Spearfish Creek in town as well. Most of the creeks that are higher elevation are pretty iced up. This is going to be the week to...
